Fourth graders from Cascade Brook School advocate for people with disabilities…see what our leaders of tomorrow are up to!

FARMINGTON - Recently, Whitney Fraser, a student in Lynn Cook’s fourth-grade class at Cascade Brook School, wrote a letter to Darryl Wood, the executive director of LEAP, a local nonprofit organization that provides residential services and advocacy for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

In her letter, Fraser asked what she and her classmates could do to “make it easier for handicapped people to get around or anything to help.”

With Developmental Disabilities Awareness Day held in March, LEAP was running a campaign to raise awareness of the challenges associated with having a significant disability. So, the letter came at an opportune time to both answer Fraser’s question and involve the class in an educational experience.

Fraser and her classmates invited Wood to come speak to their class. He was accompanied by Sharon Lake, a member of the LEAP community who requires a wheelchair for mobility. Wood spoke to the class about how... continue reading

LEAP golf benefit raises $7,000, thanks to businesses and players
